The Photography Group is a picture of health

The group meets on the first Thursday of each month at the home of the leader, Jeanette Rothwell. At recent meetings, as many as a dozen members have turned up with their cameras. There are good collections of pictures on each month's chosen theme. Projects have included architectural styles, birds, pub signs, action pictures, glass, churches and trees. Useful question-and-answer sessions cover topics of interest to keen photographers. A perfect host, Jeanette serves up delicious coffee.

Anyone who likes taking pictures and is interested in joining the group should

call Jeanette Rothwell on 01702 715005

Photo Group members meet at the Cliffs

For a variety of reasons, only six members of the group managed to get to the November 5 meeting. The get-together was

held at the Cliffs Pavilion, Westcliff, because leader Jeanette Rothwell and her husband Peter were away enjoying a holiday

cruise. As usual, the atmosphere was cheerful and there were many useful exchanges on photographic topics.

Day out at Burnham offers plenty of photo subjects

Picturesque Burnham on Crouch welcomed members of Southend U3A's Photography Group for a day of recording the town's features. A pub lunch went

down well and many excellent photographs were added to the group's stock for display at U3A meetings.

Big turnout for meeting at leader's home

Lucky thirteen members of the Photography Group met at leader Jeanette's home on Thursday 7th May 2009. All

but one are pictured (the missing one took the photo). The project topic was Colour Contrasts, and there was no

shortage of entries, many of which will be posted soon on the board at Tuesday meetings. A feature of the meeting

was a tutorial on Gimp, the free image editing program, given by Mike Eldridge-Doyle via laptop and Jeanette's TV.

Transport topic brings in some old railway movers

These two pictures were among many submitted for the Photography Group's Transport project. One shows an abandoned railcar

in France and the other shows a former london Tube train now in regular use in the Isle of Wight's efficient transport system.

Back to the Cliffs as leader honeymoons

Six members of the Photography Group held the March monthly meeting at the Cliffs Pavilion in the absence

of leader Jeanette Behn - now Jeanette Rothwell after her marriage to Peter, Southend U3A's Membership

Secretary. The project for the month was Transport, and those who attended brought with them portfolios

containing some interesting interpretations of the theme.

A quiet start to the new year for Photo Group

Just four members of the Photography Group attended the first meeting of the year

at the home of group leader Jeanette Rothwell. Their latest project was based on Food

and each member showed a varied selection of pictures. The SD card slot on

Jeanette's impressive new flatscreen TV was tested with cards from two cameras and

acquitted itself to excellent effect.

Snappers branch out into tree photography

The latest project subject for members of Southend U3A's Photography Group was trees. This

picture shows an autumn scene in Belfairs Woods, Leigh.

Churches project offers a challenge

Before Trees we had Churches. These pictures show two aspects of St Clement's Church, Leigh. The

project attacted a large number of submissions by members of the group. As usual, our pictures were

displayed by group leader Jeanette Behn on boards at the back of the hall at full Tuesday meetings of the U3A.

Raise a glass to a shining subject

Glass was a popular project subject. Here are two pictures from among the many which were submitted.

Members focus on natural beauty

Seventeen members of the group travelled in various cars to RHS Hyde Hall Garden, near Chelmsford, to take
pictures. Here are just two of the dozens of photos taken by the enthusiasts, one looking remarkably like
a bird, the other a tranquil view of pond life.

Almost by coincidence, an earlier project for members of the group was Garden Features. This colourful close-up was one of the entries.

With leader Jeanette away in China, members held their October 2007 meeting at the Cliffs

Pavilion, Westcliff.

Members of the group pose for the camera during an earlier meeting at the home of group leader

Jeanette (back row, centre).

Out for the day - members of the group outside the Maldon Little Ship Club during the group's

picture taking outing to picturesque Maldon last July.
