The Diners' Club

 

We try to travel the world (passport needed): Chinese, Indian, Thai, Italian English and whatever is around. We have not had Haggis YET! I choose the venue, then go and taste-test before booking, arrange the menu to an acceptable price and set the date. All monies are collected before the day of the meal and in some cases the menu will be numbered so that members choose from the menu, therefore making it easier for the restaurant on the day. During 2008 the average price of lunches has increased to £12 a head but it's still very reasonable and the group is well supported.

Our diners discover they have an affinity with Affinity

 

 

Diners' Club members went to the Affinity restaurant in The Highlands, Leigh-on-Sea, for lunch. Twenty-eight of them enjoyed

an appetising meal This has become a very popular venue and is expected to be used again and again.

 

Breakfast time in a seafront restaurant

 

 

Breakfast in Toulouse Restaurant on the seafront at Westcliff. This was enjoyed by 23 members, who

thought it was reasonably priced and very enjoyable. The next lunch will be at Affinity in London Road,

Leigh, on 16th October.

Thai-ing up a whole new experience

 

Lunch at The Tudor House in the Highlands, Leigh-on-Sea, featured Thai food.  The outing was attended

by 22 members, who enjoyed a very good two-course lunch. The staff were most polite and looked after

us very well.

No half measures at Halfway House

Here you see members of the Diners Club eagerly awaiting their lunch to be served at the

Halfway House, Southend. All 28 members were busy talking and getting to know about

each other and about other groups within the U3A. Then it was peace whilst they tucked

into their lunch which I must say was very good. After eating they were eager to get their

hands on the list for the next meal. This will be an evening meal at the Paparazzi in

Hamlet Court Road, Westcliff.

 

Barnacles outing a delicious success

Lunch at Barnacles Bistro in the Ridgeway, Westcliff, went very well, John Boote writes.

There were 29 of us there in total. The food was good and plentiful. The service was good

from three young ladies. We did have to wait between courses but at least we all got

served together. The members were in a very joyful mood. Another good restaurant to

go back to in the future.

 

First lunch outing of the year

The first lunch of the year was enjoyed by 27 members at The Olive Tree Fish and

Chip Restaurant in Westcliff. The food and atmosphere were very good and the

members were in very high spirits. This was our second visit to this venue. AS said:

"The best in town." 

 

Ocean beach is the venue for breakfast

John Boote writes: Eighteen people enjoyed Breaskfast at the Ocean

Beach Resturant on the sea front on Thursday morning, 20th November.

Although the tide was out, the food was excellent and enjoyed by all.

There was a good range of food to choose from, the service was very

good and the waitresses were very polite and obliging.

 

Diners' Club at Alvaro's

 

 

At Alvaro's Restaurant in Helens Road, Westcliff, we had a very good lunch, writes John Boote.

The service was first class, with very pleasant waiters.The food was excellent as usual. I say that

because it is as good as it was 30years ago when Betty and I used to go there and the

surroundings were very inviting. All in all, very good with a return visit a must.

 

Roslin Beach afternoon tea 

 

Afternoon tea time - members of The Diners' Club at the Roslin Beach Hotel.

A party of twenty attended and sat down to Tea at 3.00pm. The food was fine

but service and attention to delivery and display of food was not at all good. For

a hotel it was very bad. The cafes under the Arches are better. - J.B.

 

At the Gold Coast

 

 

Members of the Luncheon Club tuck into a Chinese buffet meal at the Gold Coast

Chinese restaurant on 25th July. The meal was enjoyed by 23 members.
