Southend U3A Book Club

Southend U3A has an active Book Club. Members choose the books they wish to read, and there are lively sessions as the books are discussed afterwards. To join, contact Marian Rule on 01702 337921.

Marion Rule writes: Members of the Book Club continue to read and enjoy a variety of different books, with authors from Ian Rankin, with Exit, Music, which we thought was perhaps not one of his best, to reading another book by Khaled Hosseini called A Thousand Splendid Suns. This was generally acknowledged as being extremely interesting and thought-provoking, being another story about Afghanistan, giving us some insight into the life of that country from a woman’s perspective, which is so different to our own.

The current book is called Father Figure by the politician Ann Widdicombe. Several of us had been to the library a few weeks earlier to listen to her giving a talk which we found very interesting, so decided to read one of her books for June. Not everyone was at this meeting due to holidays, etc., but those attending found it very good, giving a tale of a messy divorce and care of children from a man’s point of view.

The last book for the summer session will be How Did I Get Here From There? by Clare Rayner, which is her life story.

It has been a very good first few months of reading, and as intended, not always books that would necessarily be read, but nevertheless, mostly enjoyed.   We look forward to starting again in September with another selection of books.
